My first date in high school was the freshman Sadie Hawkins Dance, fall of ‘67. I knew girls existed, of course, but yeah, I had no idea what do do about them :)
.
I am in that awkward stage
I don’t know how to dance
My shoes are scuffed and dirty
And boy, them corduroy pants
.
I’m pretty good at schoolwork
But shyness holds me back
Teacher’s pet they call me
But it’s confidence I lack
.
Yeah Neil had it right that
Breaking up is hard to do
first you have to find a girl
Who will fall in love with you
.
Then out of the blue one day
A girl phones me at my home
Says her name is Diana
Like the goddess, did you know?
.
Invites me over to her house
I’m lacking any grace
Her mom brings in some cookies
And I put on a brave face
.
Yeah Neil had it right that
Breaking up is hard to do
first you have to find a girl
Who will fall in love with you
.
Diana asks me to
the Sadie Hawkins dance
a date with a girl? Of course
wasn’t gonna miss that chance
.
mysterious advantage
it certainly wasn’t me
our parents arranged this
it wasn’t meant to be
.
Yeah Neil had it right that
Breaking up is hard to do
first you have to find a girl
Who will fall in love with you
.
a one hit wonder, that date
it’s back to the books, alone
there wouldn’t be another
until my junior prom
.
Tausbee was my rival
In each and every class
Our parents in the Masons
And Tausbee liked to dance
.
Yeah Neil had it right that
Breaking up is hard to do
first you have to find a girl
Who will fall in love with you
.
Both of us good at school
She was always ahead
Neither of us dated
Noses in books, we read
.
Come the senior prom
We dated once again
Wasn’t going anywhere
But we had a little fun
.
Yeah Neil had it right that
Breaking up is hard to do
first you have to find a girl
Who will fall in love with you
the corduroy pants were from Sears Roebuck catalogue, by the way 😁one in army green and one in copper! Good times.

It actually made me nervous reading it. I see I never got past so much.
Scuffed shoes, Sears corduroys, and first-date panic had me laughing like a gremlin, sorry, you can call me a gremlin now. XDDD I kept picturing freshman Roger trying to survive cookies, Diana, and a dance floor, then somehow it got sweet in that awkward old-photo way. Army green and copper pants from the catalogue is such a perfect final detail, like yep, romance really did begin with fabric choices and terror. Haha!
